About the Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series
By Carrie Flaspohler, Director and Curator

Finlandia University Gallery exhibits the artwork of Finnish and Finnish American artists because it is an important part of the story of Finlandia University and the local community.  By exhibiting the work of Finnish and Finnish American artists, we are honoring our roots, addressing our contemporary connections and seeking relevance in our broader world.

The Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series was initiated 25 years ago as a way to celebrate and promote Finnish American culture, and as an opportunity to educate Finlandia students in the International School of Art & Design.  The series has continued to expand with a traveling 10-year retrospective to Finland.  The series features prominent Finnish American artists who have demonstrated a high level of professional success with national and international exhibition records.  By bringing this caliber of artist to Finlandia University’s campus, our art students are afforded unparalleled access to professional artists, including individual critiques and mentoring with visiting artists.
