The Art of Haiti | Selected works from Waterloo Center for the Arts’ Haitian Collection

Curator: Kent Shankle, Director WCA

The Waterloo Center for the Arts in Waterloo, Iowa began collecting art from Haiti in 1977.  Over the last four decades, the Haitian Collection has grown to more than 1,500 works of art and is recognized as the largest public collection of Haitian art in the world. Work includes fine examples of Haitian paintings, beaded and sequined flags, metal and wood sculptures, assemblages, papier-mâché and more. Today Haiti is not only equally represented by self-taught and by trained artists, but the visual arts are flourishing like nowhere else in the Caribbean.
